06.03.2008 - 07.03.2008: New Downtowns - die neuen Innenstädte
How does a sustained urbanity for the 21 century look like? And might it be possible to plan such a future urbanity?
At the symposium Planning Urbanity: life, work, space in the 'new downtown' we intend to reflect the means and meaningfulness of shaping new inner city districts.
Therefore, it is sensible to take one of Europe's most ambitious urban redevelopment projects as a starting point: The project 'HafenCity'. At around 155 hectares, HafenCity is one of the most prominent city centre development projects in Europe and will increase the size of Hamburg city centre by 40 percent. Thus, it is swiftly changing the face of Hamburg and creating a modern European city centre on the water-front. The planners of the project envision a cosmopolitan mix of apartments, offices, shops, and facilities for culture, leisure and tourism. But is it possible to plan such an urbanity? And how, where, when, and why? The project HafenCity is a good starting point for a debate on 'new downtowns'. It offers a splendid opportunity for academics from various disciplines to reflect newly planned urbanities.
